When Experience Shows Up for Itself, Everything Changes
We hosted CareerCon Job Hunt Summit for Seasoned Professionals in Denver, Colorado and by midday, I was reminded of something I already knew but there are times when you need to see it, feel it, or hear it live and in person. And here it is...
We don’t need fixing. Our experience speaks for itself but at times, we feel broken. We feel as if who we are in our hunt for the perfect position is not enough. Why? Because we have been turned down or get no traction in our efforts whatsoever.
Truth is, our ‘return on experience’ simply needs reframing and personal operational system of sorts to ensure we are seen, we are heard and we sure are valued for our seasonality.
Nearly 90 professionals in their 40's, 50's, 60s and beyond walked into CareerCon in Denver hosted by my company SecondActWomen and they were carrying questions, frustration and feelings of defeat. What they left with were actual tools, high-level thinking and perspective they could use immediately in their searches.
What Stood Out That Just May Help You: LinkedIn
Hiring really works today because 95% of recruiters use LinkedIn regularly, and 35.5 million people have been hired through connecting right here on LinkedIn.
Engagement on LinkedIn is how recruiters and hiring managers find you. You must comment, like, re-post, and engage with people and the companies you hope to work for.
Spraying and praying only hurts your chances. You are wasting your time. Be focused.
Personal branding is key. It is not a logo; it is how you are remembered or even better, it is what they say about you when you are not in the room. What’s your brand saying?
Storytelling changes interviews. Literally. Get yours together.
AI should be your friend (mine has a name). It can work for you, not against you.
Hire yourself. Consulting is not starting over; it is building forward with what you already know.

Your attitude will shift when you stop asking, “Am I still relevant?” because the answer is ‘H-E-double hockey sticks’ yes you are. Start asking, “How do I use what I know strategically?”
That is the difference because in the end, our guests learned it certainly is not about career reinvention. It is about recognizing that the experience already holds leverage. It is the dividend in the R.O.I. formula.
If you were at CareerCon, we thank you for showing up ready to do the work. If you were not, know this conversation is not over.
When your experience shows up for itself, everything changes. Your experience still has a lot to say in the second half and while some may say you are out of your prime. I say you’re in your prime and just getting started.
Get up. Dress up. Show up. And never, ever give up. The job is waiting for you.
